Overview

17-hydroxyprogesterone testing is mainly used for early detection of congenital adrenocortical hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disease that affects the function of the adrenal cortex.

CAH is caused by a deficiency or abnormality in certain enzymes that prevent the adrenal glands from properly synthesizing steroid hormones. The most common type is 21-hydroxylase deficiency, resulting in the accumulation of 17α-OHP.

17α-OHP screening of newborns can identify children who may be at risk for CAH early and enable appropriate interventions to improve their health.
