Background

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is a heterogeneous group of diseases caused by a significant deficiency of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), commonly referred to as "favism", and is one of the most common genetic enzyme deficiency diseases.

Treatment

Favism is an acute intravascular hemolytic anemia caused by the consumption of fava beans or fava bean products in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. The clinical manifestations are yellowish staining of the skin and sclera, hemoglobinuria in some cases, and hepatomegaly in some cases. Favism occurs in young children and children, and is more common in males. The incidence of the disease has been reported in the literature to decrease significantly with age, but the reasons for this are unclear. According to 1several surveys around the world, only some people with glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency develop the disease after eating fava beans, with the incidence ranging from 10.3% to 31.5%. The onset of favism is not related to the amount of fava beans consumed, so there may be unidentified factors involved in the onset of favism. The presence of vicine and isouramil in fava beans is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of hemolysis. Avoidance of fava beans and the use of drugs with oxidative effects may reduce the occurrence ofhemolysis. Other Specifications
