Overview
PKU phenylketonuria is an inherited metabolic disease caused by insufficient or complete lack of phenylalanine oxidation activity. This causes the body to be unable to metabolize phenylalanine properly, allowing it to accumulate in the body and produce harmful substances. Without timely intervention, PKU can lead to neurological damage and intellectual disability. However, these problems can be avoided or alleviated in most cases if specific nutritional treatment is provided early.
